Chemical Peel
Introduction to Chemical Peels
A Chemical Peel is a non-surgical, cosmetic treatment procedure aiming to balance the facial skin texture and tone, repair blemishes and imperfections, and improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
This process uses a chemical application that, when applied to the skin, causes the worn, dead and damaged surface layers of the skin to shed away, revealing the newer, healthier skin beneath.
How does a Chemical Peel work?
A chemical peel, is a resurfacing, exfoliating treatment that uses a chemical agent to strip the top dermal layers (dead skin cells) away to reveal a fresh face.
At Elite Medical Spa, we begin with a consultation to see if you are, in fact, a good candidate for a Chemical Peel. We will evaluate your health and skin concerns before getting started.
Please note these are not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additional factors include those patients with previous sensitivities or allergic reactions to active ingredients used in particular peels, use of certain medications, and time between your last treatment. Please disclose any pertinent information to your skincare specialist.
To begin treatment, we will apply eye and hair protection, and then we will thoroughly cleanse the treatment area’s skin, ridding it of makeup, oils, and other debris.
Next, we will apply the chemical peel solution that causes controlled trauma to the area, causing the skin to peel off and a new, more youthful layer to appear. The chemical solutions vary, but our most commonly used peels include active ingredients of carbolic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid or trichloroacetic acid.
Once the treatment is complete, the solution will be removed or neutralized, and healing can begin.
Pre and post-chemical peel treatment
Chemical peels require some preparation and aftercare to be performed by you.
Two weeks before your peel:
- We ask you to begin washing your face with a special cleaner that we will provide. This is to prepare your skin for the treatment application.
- It is important to avoid tanning beds and direct sun exposure at this time.
- Remember to wear SPF to protect your skin from sun damage.
- Avoid the use of products containing retinol
- Follow any individual medicinal regimes given to you by your doctor or medical aesthetician.
- The treatment area must be free of infection and clean of any open lesions.
- Follow any special instructions pertaining to your skin condition or peel type
After your peel:
- You may notice redness and irritation, much like a sunburn reaction as a result of the peel.
- You will be advised of what creams or lotions to apply and what to avoid (retinol and/or hydroquinone) following your peel.
- Avoid touching, picking, and peeling the skin. Let it heal naturally (and with the instructions provided.
- Continue to avoid the sun and tanning beds (for two weeks) and wear appropriate SPF protection.
- No additional facial procedures should be completed in the two weeks following your chemical peel.
- Remember, you can always contact us with any questions or concerns.
